Roberto Luongo - Number 1” by Marilyn S. Mylrea

Painting "Roberto Luongo - Number 1" by Marilyn S. Mylrea

We are pleased to present a new painting by Marilyn S. Mylrea entitled “Roberto Luongo – Number 1”. Art and sports do not usually unite and often times the world of elite culture and sweaty sports has even collided. Yet, at other times during history, they have become one as in the goalie painting by Ken Danby entitled “At the Crease” and George Bellow’s boxers, as well as the depiction of Wayne Gretzky by Andy Warhol. Ms. Mylrea has chosen the Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo as her subject. This painting was inspired by Roberto Luongo. She states, “I recently became a fan, just like so many Vancouverites when I watched the playoffs. There is a powerful presence inside of Roberto which extends beyond his amazing achievements and skills as a top goalie. Goalies represent all of us deflecting the blows and attacks of life, and great goalies ultimately represent protection and winning. Roberto’s calmness, determination and inner strength is reflected in his attitude and this provides hope for all of us. Heroes are still only people, yet they can represent the very best within all of us.” Ms. Mylrea’s intention for this painting was to create a positive, heroic and soulful painting. There was never any intention for him to look like Jesus, and we hope that any unintended religious symbolism does not offend anyone of any religion. The number one reflects Roberto Luongo’s actual number, and it also symbolizes that we are all number one with the power of God within each of us. And, that we are all blessed!

We wish Roberto Luongo and all of the Vancouver Canucks Great Success!
