Contemporary Artist Marilyn S. Mylrea - Portraiture Faces Masks - Pretty Poses

Pretty Poses
Oil on canvas  H. 4' x W. 3'   1993

PORTRAITURE, FACES & MASKS - This painting shows the false idealizations that women have had to endure due to society’s expectations. I feel that we are made to be like dolls and pretty flowers. There is not supposed to be any substance or intellect. Therefore, I’ve shown the idealistic beautiful model, the doll and the rose. The thorns of the rose are not shown for in our patriarchal society they do not exist. Women are not supposed to be real. We are made up with false eyelashes, fake breasts, skinny thighs and trendy fashions. We are dolls. Barbie is, of course, the ideal. We are pretty poses, not real human beings.
