Contemporary Artist Marilyn S. Mylrea - Figures Figurative Art - Dancing the Song of Death with David

Dancing the Song of Death with David
Oil on canvas  H. 6' 2" x  W. 4' 4"  1986
Private Collection

FIGURATIVE ART - I completed this work when I was at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. I had a picture that inspired this pose of the back of Michelangelo’s "David", which I had thought about and looked at for a long time. This painting symbolizes that the real world is the spiritual world. The figure dancing with David is a spiritual shadow, yet she is more real than the physical world of David who appears to be real. I am playing with the illusions of reality, life and death. I was also trying to show two different styles of painting combined together. There is the realism of David’s body, yet I’ve also shown drips and loose brushstrokes to emphasize a dramatic expressionistic quality.
